Gen Edward Katumba Wamala the Minister of Works and Transport has outlined plans for the construction of standard gauge railways that will soon commence.

Katumba made the statement during the Iftar dinner hosted by Yuasa Investment Limited where many dignitaries were present that was held at Kampala Sheraton Hotel.

Katumba also said that the government is in talks with a Turkish company for the construction of the standard gauge railways.

“We have recognized the demand for standard gauge railways, and we have partnered with a reputable Turkish company to fulfil this need,” he stated.

This partnership signifies a significant step forward in the modernization of the transportation network, promising enhanced efficiency and reliability in rail services nationwide.

Additionally, the Minister tackled the pressing issue of potholes riddling city streets, underscoring the government’s ambitious roadmap to bolster road safety measures.

“We have devised a comprehensive strategy, and come July, substantial road construction endeavors will commence across the city to mend these potholes,” he underscored.

Emphasizing the urgency of immediate action, General Katumba Wamala reiterated, “Swift action is paramount to alleviating commuter stress and minimizing vehicular damage.”

He extended his appreciation to the Turkish contractors for their commendable contributions to the nation’s infrastructure.

“I’d like to extend my gratitude to the Turkish contractors for their remarkable work. Their execution of impressive road projects is noteworthy, and we anticipate their timely completion,” he declared.

Touching upon road safety, the Minister acknowledged the prevalent issue of road accidents, stressing the collective effort needed to combat it.

“I’m aware of the clamor for standard gauge railways, but it’s essential to recognize that road safety requires a collective endeavor,” he observed.

Katumba Wamala urged the public to prioritize road safety and adopt responsible conduct while driving. He emphasized the severity of the matter, stating, “Annually, we lose nearly 4,000 lives. That’s a significant toll.”

The Minister’s plea for collective action underscores each citizen’s pivotal role in ensuring safer roads for all.

Hasham Wahaib, CEO of Yuasa Investment Limited, stressed the significance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and implored individuals and businesses to support their communities.

Wahaib emphasized the importance of unity and compassion for the less fortunate, remarking, “Ramadan teaches us to care for the needy, to foster connections, and to look out for one another.”

He emphasized the sanctity of this blessed month and its teachings, asserting, “No one should suffer alone, and no one should go hungry.” He stressed the obligation to extend a helping hand to those in need.

Wahaib further expounded on the significance of the last 10 days of Ramadan, particularly Laylatul Qadr, the blessed night falling on odd nights.

Taking a moment for introspection, Wahaib reflected on the role of businesses and individuals in uplifting their communities.

“As we conduct our business affairs or navigate corporate environments, we must question whether we’re truly fulfilling our duty to the less fortunate,” he urged.

Acknowledging ongoing charitable endeavors, he urged a collective focus on identifying and addressing any deficiencies in meeting the community’s needs.

Wahaib underscored the importance of self-reflection and proactive measures.

“Let’s earnestly strive to reconcile our actions and ensure we’re fulfilling our role in aiding those in need,” he implored.
