The Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG), Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, has informed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni that the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has no house or houses in the United Kingdom (UK).
In a letter dated May 11, 2024, President Museveni said that he received a confirmation from the deputy IGG revealing that Speaker Among never declared ownership of any house in the UK.
Based on the IGG’s letter, President Museveni directed the Foreign Affairs Minister, Gen Abubaker Jeje Odongo, to write to relevant authorities in the UK to demand the source of their information, which alleges that the Speaker has a house or houses there.
“Rt.Hon. Speaker Among has told me that she doesn’t own any house or houses in the UK. Write an appropriate letter to relevant authorities in the UK to demand the source of the information. They cannot falsely accuse any of our people, and we just let them pass,” Museveni’s letter read in part.
This is the second letter which President Museveni is writing regarding the recent sanction against Speaker Among and two other former ministers, Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu, over their alleged involvement in the theft of iron sheets meant for Karamoja youths.
On April 30, 2024, the Deputy Foreign Secretary, Andrew Mitchell, announced sanctions on high-profile Ugandan politicians charged with corruption, and the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda.
This is the first time the UK government has used the Global Anti-Corruption Sanctions regime on the individuals involved in corruption in Uganda. The three sanctioned individuals will be subject to travel bans and asset freezes.
