The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) is set to conduct four sets of examinations in 2024.
These include the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) for both the Old and New Curriculum, and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
This was confirmed in a statement dated May 24, 2024, by the UNEB Executive Director, Dan Odongo.
According to Odongo, this will be the first time UNEB is conducting the UCE examination based on the New Lower Secondary Curriculum (NLSC), adding that UNEB will also offer a one-time transitional UCE exam based on the old curriculum.
“This provides a final opportunity for students who prefer to be assessed under a system with which they are familiar. There will be no repeat of this transitional exam; future UCE exams will solely adhere to the new curriculum. To be qualified for the new curriculum at UCE, students must have passed the PLE (Grades 1-4) or its equivalent and completed four years of ordinary-level education,” Odongo said.
The Executive Director added that PLE grades shall be verified automatically by the e-registration software for those who sat for PLE within the periods specified, and registration will be sent to schools at the commencement of the exercise or earlier.
According to the statement, people who qualify for the old circulum include those who sat for UCE in 2023 but would like to improve their grades, those who failed to register for UCE in 2023, those who registered in 2023 but failed to sit for the examinations, and those whose UCE results were cancelled in 2023.
The New Lower Secondary Curriculum requires candidates to register for a minimum of eight and a maximum of nine subjects.
