The Amplify Uganda Music Expo (AUMEX) 2024 brought together a diverse array of creatives, industry leaders, and innovators from across the continent, igniting conversations on how to propel African music to greater heights. With a focus on practical strategies and transformative insights, this year’s expo set the stage for actionable change in Africa’s creator economy. Here are five key trends and takeaways from the event that are shaping the future of African music:

1. Cross-Border Collaboration is Key to Growth

Wendy Verwey Bekker Ditto Regional Manager for Africa emphasized the transformative power of collaboration beyond national borders. She encouraged artists to work with creatives from other countries to expand their fan base and build a truly Pan-African presence. “The more you collaborate, and the more music you release the more you connect with audiences outside your immediate reach,” she explained, highlighting the role of partnerships in breaking through geographical and cultural barriers.

2. Digital Management is Non-Negotiable

In today’s digital-first music industry, Sheba Achitsa from The Orchard stressed the importance of having skilled digital managers. She urged artists to invest in professionals who can properly handle online assets, ensure accurate metadata, and manage timely uploads. “Proper metadata ensures proper remuneration,” she noted, emphasizing that intentionality in releases and attention to detail are critical for success in the streaming era.

3. The Power of Networking and Shared Resources

During his keynote, Abaasa Rwemereza, Executive Director of AUMEX, explained that the expo was created to provide hope for the industry through initiatives focused on networking and knowledge sharing. “AUMEX is a response to the challenges we face. It’s here to bring hope through collaboration, shared resources, and innovative ideas to shape the future of the industry,” he said. This sentiment resonated across panels and workshops, as attendees were encouraged to forge connections and leverage shared expertise to drive growth.

4. Intentionality in Releases and Career Planning

Panelists throughout the expo urged creators to approach their careers with strategic intent. From planning release dates 2 months beforehand to ensuring consistent branding, the message was clear: intentionality pays off. As the industry becomes increasingly competitive, artists who take a structured approach to their music and career development are more likely to succeed.

5. Pan-African Collaboration is the Future

Ali Alibhai, CEO of Talent Africa Group, passionately spoke about the importance of Pan-African collaboration in propelling the continent’s music industry forward. He shared examples of successful cross-continental projects and highlighted the untapped potential of working together. “Our industry’s growth depends on breaking silos and creating a unified front across Africa,” he explained, encouraging attendees to think beyond borders and embrace partnerships.

The Common Thread: Learning Fuels Growth

The overarching theme of AUMEX 2024 was the transformative power of learning. Through workshops, panels, and networking opportunities, the expo highlighted that continuous education and intentional collaboration are essential for the growth of Uganda’s music industry and Africa as a whole.

As AUMEX 2024 concluded, it left attendees inspired and equipped with strategies to thrive in an evolving industry. From expanding networks to mastering the digital landscape, the future of African music looks brighter than ever, fueled by innovation, collaboration, and a collective drive for excellence
