The investigation into the tragic demise of Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplangat has taken a significant turn with the release of CCTV footage capturing his final moments. The video reveals a harrowing sequence of events, igniting a sense of urgency to find justice for the fallen star.
The footage shows Kiplangat speeding through Eldoret’s Kimumu Junction at around 1:15 AM, seemingly attempting to elude pursuers. In his black Toyota Hilux, he takes a corner at high speed, losing control and crashing into a ditch. Minutes later, two individuals rush to the scene, brutally attacking him with knives before disappearing into the night.
Local police commander Stephen Okal confirmed that detectives used the vital CCTV evidence to apprehend two suspects in neighboring counties. He emphasized that both individuals have a history of criminal activity, further raising concerns about the safety of Eldoret’s residents.
Expressing confidence in the investigation’s progress, Okal stated, “We are nearing completion and expect to present them before court tomorrow.”
Kiplangat’s body, discovered on Saturday night, bore multiple knife wounds to the neck and chest, painting a grim picture of the brutal attack. While the motive remains unclear, detectives believe the incident stemmed from a collision between the athlete’s vehicle and the suspects’ motorcycle. “This likely triggered their violent response,” Okal explained to reporters.
