Government Denies Holding NUP Supporters Fugitive

NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi with families of missing persons

Families of the 18 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters that went missing about four years ago cried after a prosecutor said that the government is also looking for John Ddamulira who skipped bail while facing arson charges.

The Attorney General also denied the charges against the five other NUP members wanted by the court and will start the hearing again next month on 3rd May 2024.

As is customary, family members of the sought-after NUP affiliates attended the High Court session on Wednesday.

The proceedings took place behind closed doors, with the government submitting additional affidavits, refuting any involvement in the apprehension of six individuals reportedly missing.

According to prosecution attorneys, Ddamulira was granted bail following his arrest in October 2020 but absconded thereafter.

Information from police intelligence indicates that Ddamulira was detained for arson in Kisekka, released on bail in October 2020, and failed to reappear, contrary to NUP’s assertion of his disappearance in November.

Relatives of the missing individuals were further dismayed by other evidence disavowing the whereabouts of five out of the 18 individuals. The government asserts it lacks information regarding Michael Ssemudu, Peter Kirya, Mustafa Luwemba, George Kasumba, and Godfrey Kisembo.

The court will reconvene on May 3 for the prosecution to address the presented evidence.
