The Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee has issued a call to the government, urging the urgent release of Ugandan Shillings 756.9 billion to the Electoral Commission (EC) for the implementation of the roadmap leading to the 2026 general elections.

Mrs. Robina Rwakoojo, Chairperson of the Committee, emphasized that the EC’s planned activities for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 financial years require a total of Ugandan Shillings 765.6 billion, with only a fraction of this amount, Ugandan Shillings 8.6 billion, allocated thus far.

Rwakoojo stressed the importance of adhering to statutory timelines for the planned activities, highlighting that any further delays could jeopardize the integrity and fairness of the electoral process.

Presenting the committee’s recommendation during a plenary session chaired by Speaker Anita Among, MPs emphasized the need for urgent funding to enable the EC to fulfill its statutory obligations leading up to the general elections.

Additionally, concerns were raised about delays by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in providing Ugandan Shillings 11 billion, which was approved in 2017 to enhance the remuneration of the commission, but remains pending.
