Government has procured new road units worth shs59 billion each comprising a motor grader and wheel loader to 14 new districts around the country.

The beneficiary districts created between 2017 and 2019 include Bugweri, Kalaki, Kapelabyong, Kalenga, Kassanda, Kitagwenda , Kazo, Kwania, Kikuube, Madi-Okollo, Nabilatuk , Obongi, Rwampara and Terego.

According to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, by providing the equipment to the districts, government seeks to ensure they help maintain roads within their jurisdictions.

“Roads facilitate the movement of people, goods, labour, resources and products in order to create market opportunities for both the consumers and producers. The importance of the district, urban and community access road network which stands at 138,142 km representing 86.9% of the entire road network in the country cannot therefore be overemphasised since many of the ordinary citizens use these roads to access markets, schools, hospitals and other social services,” she said.

Nabbanja said that tremendous efforts to improve road infrastructure in the country are aimed at boosting trade, business and overall human developments.

“Roads serve as lifelines, connecting people to markets, schools, healthcare facilities, and other essential services. They facilitate trade, tourism, and investment, driving sustainable development and creating opportunities for all.”

According to Nabbanja, the provision of new road equipment to the new districts is a welcome gesture by government which will improve both inter and intra connectivity within the districts.

“The provision of road equipment to new districts underscores our commitment to equitable development and inclusive growth. By extending access to modern machinery and technology to previously underserved areas, we empower local authorities to effectively maintain and expand their road networks, thereby fostering economic activity, enhancing mobility, and improving access to services for residents.”

The Minister for Works and Transport, Gen Katumba Wamala said the extra equipment including a vibro roller, a water bowser and two dump trucks will be sent to these districts once money for their procurement is availed.

He however warned against misuse of the equipment or else they will be withdrawn.

“Abuse of equipment will lead to its withdrawal. I want to warn you that the equipment should be used for what it is meant for. If there is any abuse, we shall move in very fast to withdraw it.”
