In a solemn address following the devastating collapse of the Kiteezi landfill in Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has outlined the government’s response to the tragedy that claimed 34 lives and displaced 265 individuals on August 10, 2024.

The collapse of the Kiteezi landfill, a major waste disposal site serving the Kampala area, has shocked the nation and prompted urgent calls for accountability and support.

In her address, Nabbanja has expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the government’s commitment to providing immediate relief to those affected.

Emergency teams have been dispatched to the site to assist with search and rescue operations, and temporary shelters have been set up for the displaced residents.

Nabbanja has revealed that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collapse.

“We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness,” she stated. “An independent inquiry will be conducted to ensure that all factors contributing to this disaster are identified and addressed.” The Prime Minister also has confirmed that those found responsible for any negligence or mismanagement will be held accountable.

In addition to the immediate response, Nabbanja has outlined plans for long-term measures to prevent similar incidents. These include enhanced safety regulations for waste management facilities, improved infrastructure, and stricter enforcement of environmental and safety standards.

The government has also committed to providing financial assistance and psychological support to the affected families. “We will ensure that the affected communities receive the help they need to recover and rebuild,” Nabbanja assured.

The collapse has sparked widespread concern and debate over waste management practices in Uganda. As the investigation continues, the government’s actions and responses will be closely watched by both the public and international observers.
