Nicholas Opiyo, Executive Director of Chapter Four Uganda, emphasized the crucial role of Human Rights Defenders in driving economic development during the one-day 6th Human Rights Convention held in Kampala.

In his opening remarks on Wednesday, Opiyo highlighted that Human Rights Defenders are invaluable development partners, not security threats. He underscored their peaceful nature and deep love for the country.

“We want to point to those in authority that human rights defenders are your partners, not your nemesis. We also wanted to make a point that human rights is a critical and central value for the promotion of peaceful societies,” Mr Opiyo said.

The Convention, an annual event, brings together over 250 participants from diverse sectors, including civil society, government, media, academia, the diplomatic community, and student communities.

The primary objective of the Convention is to foster open and honest dialogue on pressing human rights issues. It provides a platform for participants to network, reflect on emerging challenges, and explore innovative solutions to complex problems.

Since its inception in 2017, Chapter Four has cultivated a community dedicated to advancing human rights and democracy, striving for fair, equitable, and inclusive societies.

The Convention is organized by Chapter Four Uganda in collaboration with strategic partners.

The 6th edition, the Human Rights Convention 2024, is convened with the generous support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the East-West Management Institute, Inc. (EWMI).
