Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi is currently being treated at Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre, a private mental health facility in Namibia.

This has been confirmed by Namibia’s ambassador to Germany, Martin Andjaba in reply to a May 21 letter from a concerned Ugandan (names withheld) seeking to clarify reports that Kabaka is being “held in Namibia.”

The Ugandan is based in Germany.

In his reply on May 24, Andjaba wrote that Kabaka is not being detained in Namibia as it has been reported on some social media channels. To the contrary, Andjaba confirmed that Kabaka is in Namibia for medical reasons.

Ambassador’s letter concerning the whereabouts of Kabaka Mutebi

“He arrived in the country in April 2024 for treatment and is currently at Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre in the Outjo area in the Kunene Region,” Andjaba wrote.

He wrote that security precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of the King while in Namibia.

It is not clear what kind of disorder the Kabaka is suffering from but according to the facility’s website, it offers personalised treatment sessions for those suffering from; depressive disorders, anxiety-related disorders, personality dysfunctions (psychosis), post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), stress management, somatoform disorders, substance-related disorders, and childhood-related disorders.”

For months, there has been unease among some Baganda over Kabaka’s long absence from public events.

This month, Katikkiro Peter Mayiga told Lukiiko that the Kabaka was recuperating after medical treatment abroad.

Later, photos surfaced of the Kabaka meeting with Uganda’s ambassador to Namibia, Joseph Ndawula at what appeared to be an eco-lodge.

From the pictures, it now turns out that Kabaka was vacationing at Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre.

About the facility

According to its website, the facility was established in 1996 and caters for patients from the region and all corners of the globe.

It sits on a 5000-hectare piece of land of pristine wilderness and “guests are treated to the beauty and purity of Africa in all its splendour.”
