President Museveni has appointed former deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Peter Elwelu to a position in which he will oversee government programs in Teso.

In a  July 10, 2024 letter, Museveni said Gen Elwelu will monitor government programs in Teso and Karamoja sub-regions.

“By copy of this letter, I direct the State House Comptroller to facilitate you to carry out the assignment,” Museveni said.

Gen Elwelu was in March dropped as the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces in the UPDF.

The United States government in March slapped sanctions against Elwelu.

The US State Department announced thatElweluwas was sanctioned due to “extrajudicial killings that were committed by members of the UPDF” while he was commanding Ugandan military forces.

As a result, he and the other officials sanctions are ineligible for entry into the United States.

The new position now makes Gen Elwelu a supervisor of RDCs in the two sub-regions of Teso and Karamoja.
