President Museveni together with his wife the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni met the residents from Kiruhura and Kazo Districts at their country home in Rwakitura on Monday 1st April 2024.
The meeting was carried out by the group at Mr. Richard Nyakana’s model farm in Rwengaju, Fort Portal.
In a recent gathering, local residents praised President Museveni for his efforts in promoting engagement in the money economy, acknowledging his role in awakening them to new opportunities.
Ms. Alice Nabaasa, chairperson of the group, conveyed gratitude on behalf of the community, expressing their newfound motivation after a visit to Mr. Nyakana’s farm in Kisozi, Gomba District earlier this year. She emphasized their readiness to embark on endeavors aimed at enhancing their families’ welfare.
The group, initially received by the President at his farm, pledged to join efforts with him in mobilizing Ugandans towards wealth creation through commercial agriculture, adopting the principle of “ekibaro.”
President Museveni expressed satisfaction at the group’s response to his guidance, noting their visit to Mr. Nyakana’s farm as a crucial step towards understanding his vision for poverty alleviation. He urged them to embrace commercial agriculture, citing Mr. Nyakana’s success in earning over Shs188m annually from a single acre of land through dairy and poultry farming.
Advocating for diversification, the President advised the group to consider ventures such as dairy farming, coffee cultivation, poultry rearing, fish farming, and food crop production for sustainable income generation.
Furthermore, President Museveni pledged to establish a demonstration farm akin to Mr. Nyakana’s at Nshaara government ranch, benefiting the Western region and the nation at large.
To support agricultural productivity, he promised to provide silage choppers to every parish and tractors to every Sub County, streamlining farming activities.
In addressing land issues, President Museveni cautioned against land fragmentation, advocating for equitable inheritance practices to prevent land degradation.
He urged families to form associations for collective management of inherited property, discouraging physical division that could compromise agricultural viability.
President Museveni reiterated the importance of leaders prioritizing poverty alleviation over political pursuits, likening leaders to doctors responsible for diagnosing and remedying societal challenges.
Maama Janet Museveni, the First Lady, commended the group for embracing the President’s guidance towards wealth creation, urging them to persist in their efforts to meet their aspirations.
The meeting, attended by various dignitaries including Members of Parliament and local government officials, underscored the collective commitment towards realizing economic empowerment and sustainable development in rural Uganda.
