The Police in Kabale district have initiated an investigation into a murder by shooting of a suspected narcotic addict whose life ended as he tried to disarm Police officers.
The incident according to ASP Elly Maate the Kigezi Region Police spokesman happened at Nyanja Trading Centre, Maziba sub-county, Kabale District on Tuesday, May 21st 2024 at half past midnight.
The case was reported by N0. 18715 SGT Tumwesigye John 59, the OC Station Nyanja, resident of Nyanja trading centre village in Nyanja parish, Maziba sub-county in Kabale District.
Maate identified the deceased as Twinomujuni Chris 35-year-old Mukiga Peasant, resident of Rujogooma village in Burambira Parish Kaharo Sub County of Kabale district.
It is alleged that on the said date, at around 12:30 am, at Nyanja Trading Centre, Maziba sub-county in Kabale district, Twinomujuni (now the Deceased), Dickson Turinawe 31, Niwagaba Levi 30, Ayijuka Jordan male adult aged 30, and four others still at large, were drinking at the bar of one called Claire.
It’s further said that at the same time, they were smoking Marijuana and that the area OC went to disperse them as well as asking them to leave the bar an order they instead refused.
Maate adds that the OC together with his colleague arrested two people who were smoking narcotics (Marijuana) that unfortunately, the deceased together with others resisted, blocking the arrest of their colleagues as well as trying to confront and disarm him.
This culminated in a scuffle between the alleged narcotics smokers and the Police officers, and amidst the scuffle, the OC shot to disperse them. Unfortunately, a stray bullet injured the deceased on the leg, which made him bleed and eventually passed on.
The Police Public Relations Officer confided to the press that a Case file CRB 408/2024 was opened to investigate the matter adding that a team of officers led by the OC station ASP Akanyijuka Andrew, OC CID D/SP Mukama Hakim, Regional soco AIP Mugabe and other detectives visited, examined and documented the scene of crime.
The team recorded relevant statements of witnesses, did a postmortem, and arrested three suspects in connection with attempts to disarm the gun from the officer.
SGT Tumwesigye John OC station Nyanja and his counterpart PC Owomuhangi James have been arrested to help in investigations.
“Inquiries into the whole incident have commenced and the outcome will determine a way forward,” said Maate.
