President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has revealed that Uganda and Kenya are currently focusing on strengthening historical ties and trade between the two countries.

Museveni arrived in Kenya for a three-day state visit on May 15, 2024, at the invitation of his counterpart, President Williams Ruto, and was received by Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, the Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary.

The president’s visit aims at strengthening the longstanding bilateral relations between Uganda and Kenya, as well as exploring new avenues for collaboration and mutual benefits.

“I am delighted to be in Kenya today at the invitation of H.E. Ruto. This serves as a platform to further strengthen the strong historical ties between Uganda and Kenya. I look forward to having fruitful discussions during this visit,” President Museveni said on his official X platform.

President Museveni’s visit signifies the commitment of both leaders to foster regional integration, enhance economic cooperation, and promote stability within the East African region.

While in Kenya, President Museveni is expected to engage in high-level discussions with President Ruto with more focus on trade investment, security cooperation, and removing economic ties.

The visit is expected to strengthen the economic ties between Uganda and Kenya, with a focus on removing barriers to trade and fostering an enabling business environment.

On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, several senior Ugandan and Kenyan government officials held the second Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting in Kampala to deepen economic ties.

The deliberations focused on trade and investment; immigration and customs; energy and natural resource development; defense and security; health services; standards and quality assurance; water and lands; tourism and culture, among other areas of mutual cooperation.

The second Joint Ministerial Commission meeting is a follow-up to review the implementation status of the commitments agreed upon by both countries during the first JMC session held in Nairobi in 2019.

Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen. Jeje Odongo, said that the meeting will find remedies to challenges.
