Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has Monday, June 10, 2024, launched a countrywide mobilization and digital membership registration ahead of the 2026 general election.

The digital membership was launched by FDC party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat, who said they are ‘migrating from the labor-intensive and paper-based analog to a much easier and more efficient digital mode of running a political organization’.

Amuriat noted that the old FDC membership cards have been phased and all members must register to acquire new cards.

The party membership card will be acquired at a fee of UGX 5,000 for ordinary membership.
According to FDC party president, the ruling party NRM is reluctant to have electoral reforms aimed at ensuring the 2026 polls are free and fair.

“The reluctance of the ruling party to consider electoral reforms to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in 2026 is a matter that the party must concern itself about. Our call to the Museveni administration is for it to do whatever it takes to ensure free and fair elections in 2026,” he said.

FDC also launched its countrywide mobilization activities that will run from June 12, 2024, to July 20th, 2024. Amuriat urged FDC members to embrace the mobilization activities and also cautioned police against interrupting them.

“Our call to the citizens of Uganda is for them to embrace these pro-people activities and to the security organizations in the country to respect our rights as registered political organizations as we carry out constitutionally allowed activities,” he said.

FDC has been facing internal conflicts that led to the split of the party into two factions: Najjanankumbi under the leadership of Amuriat and the Katonga faction under the leadership of Kizza Besigye. Despite the conflict, the FDC Najjanankumbi faction is determined to keep the party moving forward.

FDC joins the opposition-leading party National Unity Platform (NUP) that already launched its mobilization activities. The activities of the latter were suspended by police following a fatal accident that occurred during the party’s mobilization drive to Masaka.
