Police in Iganga district, in conjunction with other security agencies, have discovered more than 500 magazines and gun stands in a sugar cane plantation in Busoga in Iganga, Busoga region.

This discovery was made on August 22, 2024, in Buwolomera village in Nawanyingi sub-county, Iganga district.

During an interview with the Busoga District Police Commander, Patrick Byaruhanga, on August 22, 2024, he revealed that the police discovered more than 500 magazines, gun stands, and many other pieces of ammunition.

Byaruhanga added that police were first notified on August 18, 2024, about the first discovery that contained three bags of ammunition, which was found near the road. However, on August 20, 2024, the sugarcane plantation workers called police about the second batch that was missed, which contained three more bags of empty magazines. Additionally, on August 22, 2024, the third discovery was made, which contained stands of guns and 10 round magazines.

He added that all this ammunition was rusty; however, investigations are going on.

’’Police is currently investigating how this ammunition was dropped in this sugarcane plantation and who the person responsible is, so the locals should keep calm,’’ Byaruhanga disclosed.

He further called upon the locals to stay calm because security has the situation now under control. However, he urged all scrap pickers to be careful and alert when picking and buying scrap or any other old metal in this area.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for enhanced security measures in agricultural regions, where the intersection of economic activities and safety concerns can create volatile situations.
