In Jinja, the police shot bullets into the air to scatter a crowd that became unruly when three National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters were arrested for gathering unlawfully in Buyengo town, Jinja district, on Sunday evening.

According to the Kirra Region Police Spokesperson James Mubi says that the three arranged a football match but instead, they were having placards and inciting violence in the region.

“The crowd became unruly and pelted stones at police officers prompting the firing of live bullets in the air to contain the ugly situation. No injuries sustained in the due process,” he said.

Three NUP supporters, Stephen Ochen, Fred Lutaaya, and Bashiru Kabaseke, were arrested. They were led by their team leader, Samuel Akalyamawa, who fled the scene.

A Tata vehicle with registration number UPF 583 and a motorcycle with registration number UDM 418V were impounded for allegedly transporting people from different parts of the Busoga sub-region.

The police have charged the suspects with obstructing officers on duty.

Mubi, a police spokesperson, advised political figures to follow meeting laws to avoid conflicts.

In 2023, the Constitutional Court invalidated sections of the Public Order Management Act (POMA) of 2013, which banned unauthorized gatherings. According to sections 10 and 5 of the Act, peaceful demonstrations can occur without prior permission from the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
